April 2025

Mohedian Publishing is delighted to announce the publication of an updated edition of Olivia Cox-Fill’s compelling text, Walking A Tightrope.  Available in hardback and, for the first time, in paperback. Editions in further formats will be released later this year.

Relating his journey in person the reader accompanies Jieping from his childhood in provincial China, through the capitalist values of the US and back to communist China.  As one of China’s most prestigious physicians, Dr. Wu eventually became one of New China’s national leaders.  He established his global reputation in the field of Urology, with significant medical achievements.  This memoir provides a rare insight into life in communist China at a time when most leading intellectuals were expelled to the countryside, imprisoned, or beaten to death.

Dr. Wu was appointed by Premier Zhou Enlai to act as personal physician to China’s leaders. Walking A Tightrope offers an original, first-hand account of the secret facts poisoning relationships between Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou Enlai.  It shows how Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, tried to seduce and entrap Dr. Wu in order to bring down Premier Zhou Enlai.  His account underlines what exceptional talent it took to survive the decade of the Cultural Revolution..

The revised edition includes illustrative maps and additional photographs, along with an enhanced Chronology of Chinese History expanded to provide better context for the period Wu Jieping survived admirably.  This edition also highlights key dates, along with Dr. Wu’s medical achievements, which went unrecognised behind the Bamboo Curtain..

This unique insight takes the reader through the daily lives of the doctor’s family and through the private preoccupations of Chairman Mao, his wife, Jiang Qing, and Premier Zhou Enlai among others. It is compelling reading for those wishing to understand the life of an intellectual at the highest echelons of leadership in China at a perilous time. It spans most of the 20th. Century and the first decade of the millennium.  This edition concludes with the author’s reflections on the experiences of Dr. Wu and invites readers to consider the parallels with life in the 21st Century.
